Project Background & Print Challenge

• Client goal: A premium poker-size deck with vivid color, metallic accents, and elevated packaging detail.
• Print challenge: Keeping foil edges clean and registration consistent when pairing silver foil stamping with high-gloss surfaces (gloss varnish on cards, gloss lamination on the tuck box).

Factory Note: Clean Foil + Gloss Surfaces (Cards & Box)

• Specify a foil-ready surface. Foil adhesion can suffer if it’s stamped over incompatible coatings.
  • Typical approach: knock out varnish/lamination in foil areas (or use a coating system proven compatible with stamping) to prevent edge chipping or patchy transfer.
• Design with real registration tolerances. Gloss surfaces make tiny shifts more obvious.
  • Avoid hairline foil borders that sit directly against printed outlines.
  • Give foil elements breathing room, especially around corners.
• Emboss depth must respect lamination. Over-aggressive embossing on laminated cartons can stress the film.
  • Prioritize clean edges and stable depth over extreme height.
• Control scuff risk during finishing and packing. Metallic foil and gloss surfaces can mark if they rub.
  • Use clean stacking, adequate cure/settle time, and protective packing methods to reduce abrasion in transit.
